Twice a year I head down to High Point Market in North Carolina to immerse myself in what's next and new in the industry. This time around was a little special since Duralee asked me to dream up their showroom using some of the fabrics from the EKB line!

Here are two of my favorite images of the Duralee showroom, too many to choose from.

Walking through the market is such a fuel-charge for me. So many great products, color stories, compositions, and best of all-networking. Here are the memorable and eye-catching peices I fell in love with.

A couple of months ago I was notified by Jason Kontos, editor & chief, that I was selected as one of the this year's Top 50 Designer's for New York Space's magazine. I was thrilled and honored when I heard the news. There are no words to express the joy in being recognized at such a level.

In celebration New York Space's magazine hosted the Top 50 Designers event at SICIS's Art Mosaic Factory a beautiful three floor venue in downtown NYC.

2011 Hampton Decorator Show House

So excited to be part of this year's 2011 Hampton Designer Show House. It seems like yesterday that I walked through the space, creating visions of what I thought it should look like. As soon as I entered into the Pool House, I knew this was the room for me to do.

Let's begin the tour with the exterior. I selected outdoor pieces from Scarsella's Flowers, Greenhouses & Home, simple clean lines with extrordinary

stone texture. To soften the seating area I used Duralee outdoor fabrics, finishing the look with lanterns from Arteriors Home.

Walking through the french doors the room is unveiled. Wanting to feature my line of Eileen Kathryn Boyd Fabrics for Duralee I dressed the windows in Giverny Buttercup, the Novi Slipper chairs in Pulse Hyacinth, and the daybed in Lucchese Dove.

The Nautilus print by Robert LeBeau lends it self to the calmness of the room.

The Driftwood floor lamp by Arteriors Home gives off perfect lighting over Theo Chair from Duralee.

In the alcove you'll find Kerry Irvine's Tree of Life subtly lit by Mottega's Sophia lamp in Crackle.

Every pool house should have a fun little dressing room! I used Benjamin Moore's Yellow Brick Road to pop a splash of color on the ceiling. As a huge fan of fashion handbags, I thought I would play around with my fabric line to create my own for the occasion.

High End Interiors Plastering and Painting did a phenemonal job throughout the entire space. In the kitchen I had them add another pop of color to the ceiling and horizontal stripes to the walls for added depth.

I want to thank everyone who made my vision a reality!

Had a great day yesterday shooting with the creative team at Family Circle magazine. They did an outstanding job! The flowers provided were absolutely beautiful and will serve as an inspiration for my room in the Hamptons Show House opening in July.

Hot off the press my first ever fabric collection......the Eileen Kathryn Boyd fabric books are here....so exciting! My design firm just received a package from Duralee with my new logo featured on the box. It's been so surreal to see this labor of love finally materialize into fruition.........a year in the making...... someone please pinch me. Such pride, happiness, and love went into developing these fabrics.....starting with the concept and design, to the hand and feel to the colors-it's been a journey that I will never forget.

After being approach by Duralee with the idea of creating a line of fabrics I was on cloud nine. As an Interior Designer this is what one strives for......Dorothy Draper-watch out! Just kidding, as a fan of her work this iconic innovator set the precedent of grand style in the design world.

Working with Duralee has been nothing less than exhilarating....creatively allowing me to express my love of color. The collaboration with Duralee's talented team gave me the freedom to express my love of fashion, art, and nature while developing these five fabric books.

This past week I attended the Architectural Digest Home Show.......as always it's a blast to see what's new and hot for the up coming season. Another treat was catching up with my dear friend Mark Moussa. As the creator of the Mottega line his vignette was stunning with fashion forward colors. Their stepping out color is an eye popping orange that commands your attention. It makes such a statement....it's a color you see everywhere you look now....it works in any setting from traditional to transitional into modern.

As the color influencer for the line I was overwhelmed with joy to see them in person......I worked with Mark and the team to get the right hue for each of the 9 colors develop. They translated beautifully and seeing the vignette full of color was a feast for my color crave.

The idea that you can create your own lamp is so innovative. As a designer, I can't stress how hard it is sometimes to find the perfect light fixture. As one of the finishing touches for a room, finding a lamp that's the right size, color, and proportion are just as vital as selecting any other piece for the room. Navigating through the mottega site allows you to become the designer......you can easily create a lamp from head to toe within minutes and have it within two weeks....it is fast, convenient, and simple.

Live from Martha Stewart Living Radio

I was recently invited back to join Betsy Karetnick and Kim Fernandez, the hosts of Martha Stewart Living Radio, to speak about "Good Ideas for the Bedroom". Having met with both of them before, it's always a pleasure to get behind the headphones and chit chat. Being on the radio show is a wonderful outlet to express my ideas about Interior Design.
The topic discussed was all about making your bedroom more inviting for relaxation. We spoke about de-cluttering. Take a good look at your space and let go-the things that are unnecessary. Store the TV in the armoire or take it out completely to allow for communication to flow more freely between you and your partner. Other things to store away are your laptops and phones.....I know this can be tough but give yourself a little escape from the chaos of life to get reenergized.

Another great piece of advice is to add a piece of artwork or image that uplifts your spirit. Look for things that will inspire and ignite you first thing in the morning and as you lay down for bed. Don't forget to treat yourself with good high quality sheets, we spend so much time in bed.....almost 1/3 of our lives....we deserve to be comfortable! And lastly add a little color....you know I couldn't leave without talking about color. Whether you are starting with a blank canvas or the room is fully furnished, look to see how you can pop in some color. Reach for what attracts your senses.....or be bold and try something new. The Table is Set for The Winter Antique Show 2011

Dressing up the table with a little old-world charm.... When I was asked by friend Susan Egan, of Antiques Magazine, to set a dinning vignette for the Winter Antique Show I was instantly thrilled and excited to get started. Though I've participated in many showhouses over the years, this project had a special appeal to me because of the pedrigee of amazing items at my disposal. To say the show offers the finest Antiques in the world is an understatement. Everything is breathtaking!

I approached this entire project as I would getting ready for a black tie event. What do I need first? A killer pair of shoes....It was love at first sight when I laid eyes on an Oushak Rug from Peter Pap's Oriental Rug company which became my starting point. I started envisioning bright pops of pink, blue,and green.... Before I knew it my outfit starting taking form!

Looking through the plethera of exhibitors and their inventory I found the perfect table and chairs. Liz O'Brien has a beautiful Karl Springer Table that I paired with Loop Chairs after Frances Elkins. My neutral scape was screaming for a color blast. As usual, Clarke & Clarke fabrics delivered exactly what I was looking for - Show stopping prints, textures, & colors! Little Insider Secret - rejevente a classic piece from your home by just simply adding an unexpectedly textured pillow or a bright bold colored throw - it's quick, easy, and makes a huge statement. I tried to inject that wow factor, with these classic armchairs from Clinton Howell Antique. Mix it up and get playful!

We all know that no outfit is complete without a jewelry statement. Lost City Arts has a great selection of objects. On the sideboard from Liverant and Son Antiques we placed Melt Coat Panels by Harry Bertoia, a little necessary bling! Saving the best for last....The Wedgewood china selected tops the entire table off with a lasting glisten. Be sure to take a trip to the Amory on Park Ave to check out the inspiring display of Antiques....It's on view until January 30th. Let the dining begin! Bon Apetite!

Duralee Delighted at The High Point Market

This past Market I was invited again to collaborate with the very talented Terry Galliani who is responsiable for creating showrooms for Duralee. We work closely together to set the color forcast for Fall 2010.... and I am continually inspired by them as a company...This fall Clarke & Clarke's fabrics were highlighted. The showroom was divided into three color spaces, yellow, fushia and teal. I attached some of my favorite vingettes to show all of you....It's no secret that I've been designing a textile collection for Duralee Fabrics set to launch in the Spring of 2011. During this time I've had amazing experiences, being challenged creatively and truly forced to recognize what makes me the designer that I am today....and for that I am very thankful to the Duralee Family. This showroom really sparkled this year and I can't wait to hear all of your thoughts....

Does anyone else feel like September never happened? It seems like I went to bed after a long summer day and woke up in chilly October. I absolutely love the Fall but am overwhelmed by the busy....Work gets so crazy, kids are back in school, and the Holiday's are looming!

Part of the stress & excitement of the Holiday's is the anticipation of entertaining family and friends, which for me is always centered around the Dining Room Table.

I am a big proponent of keeping the dining table set year-round. I really love using the dining room as a second family room - An inviting place that isn't reserved for Holiday's but supports everyday life. Something I started doing to my table that my clients have commented on is placing actual table lamps and stacks of books on the dining room table. This anchors the table giving it some additional mood and task lighting. I love this look because it feels very library-esque.

Seating is so important for those long family dinners. The use of these Queen Anne Arm Chairs at the head of the table give the table a very cozy and comfortable feel.

I am crazy about Banquets! I have one at my kitchen table and I'm always intrigued when I see them in dining room settings.

Size doesn't matter! I love these two intimate dining tables. Kelly Wearstlers beautiful blue tablecloth dresses this tiny table up instantly & John Saladino's clean crisp tablescape paired with those lust-worthy lilac slipcovered chairs is so elegant & effortless.

This table is my inspiration for this Holiday season. I love using unpredictable color stories and making them feel just as Holiday-like as those traditional ones. This gold, orange, and blue does just that! Don't be afraid to experiment and play around with your favorite color combinations.

Layering, Layering, Layering! Layering is definitely the key to a cozy Fall Holiday table. In addition to lamps on the table I started using scarves as table runners and thin throw blankets to add extra texture and interest. Touches of Fall foliage and other outdoor elements give any table that bundled up feeling that the season just exudes. My advice for this years Holiday Table is to experiment with items and fabrics you have at home that mean something to you.....I think you might surprise yourself at what actually ends up sticking!

I've been on a bit of inspiration overload. The Internet is such a powerful tool and can really elevate your creative notions into realistic and obtainable dreams. Between client color stories, completing my fabric collection, and being a wife & mother, I've needed all the help I can get on harnessing my creative brainpower.

This is one of my favorite color stories. Those side tables are clever and I love the leaning black mirrors.

I love the royal blue cabinetry in this beautiful kitchen. Makes me want to play with more unexpected color combo's....

I love this elegant approach at creating the perfect partner's desk. So lovely!

Who said you can't make your own Chanel.....Now that's creative!

I've been laboring over finding the perfect chairs, barstools, banquets....Oh my! Must have these barstools and the green accent cushions are a great color pop and something I would definitely use myself.

The serene palette with that gorgeous dusty gray banquette paired with the signature Romo wallpaper makes eating at this table first class all the way.

I recently made some big changes at my shop, transitioning from a retail store to strictly a design firm. In doing so I recognized the necessity to keep my team inspired by there surroundings. This was one of my favorite inspiration images.....Stay tuned for the finished product!

Covered From Every Angle

Part of designing is not being afraid to take chances and training your mind to think outside of the norm. Playing around and testing the boundaries are all part of the creative process, and for me the most exciting experience. One of the hottest trends this year is the use of asymmetrical angles and unusual shapes.

Cut-outs, Curves, and Angles with Vengence - Fashion is exploding with these bold interpretations, which are overflowing the runways. The creation of these new & interesting lines - through fashion, hairstyles, architecture - are really pushing the envelop creatively. Now I'm bursting to try these concepts out in my own designs and projects....

Often times when designing a space, we tend to let the walls dictate how we layout or arrange our furniture and accessories. Personally I'm tired of feeling constricted and prohibited by walls.....I find the most interest and intrigue in the unusual and unexpected, but also functional and visually appealing....Talk about a tricky combination, but once the recipe is in place the end result is always delicious.

Escape to Nantucket

Summer has arrived! The time of year when I escape with my family to Nantucket for the Fourth of July (my favorite holiday) On this Island 30 miles out at sea I get to recharge my life with inspiration and spend time with my Husband and kids. As an Interior Designer, mother, business owner, and individual I devour these moments where I can get back to basics no makeup and barefeet.......sketching, painting, taking a bike ride, or just putting up my feet while enjoying the sun with sunscreen of course!

Here are some of my favorite things to do while in Nantucket! Let's begin the tour with taking a stroll down Main Street. First stop is Erica Wilson. She offers this charming pendant......available in a handful of colors. Next, stop at Nantucket Looms......always inspirational. They have over 50 artist working in different mediums of paint, sculpture, jewelry........all great finds. Plus have unique novelty gifts......throws, scarves, sweater, baby blankets.....tons to check out!

Another shop on the main beaten path is Vis-a-Vis...great for jewelry, accessories, and one of a kind shoes and dresses....

Right off Main Street you'll find two inspirational shops.... Current Vintage a cool wine and clothing shop, located on Easy Street and Eye of the Needle full of great clothing of hot colors and hip looks located on Federal street next to the Boarding house a great place for dinners and late night cocktails...they have a great DJ...

After the shopping in town you can build up an appetite walking around town.... here are some of the eateries I enjoy. The Club Car.....great for a cocktail and some munchies. For dinner it's 21 Federal. ( always best to make a reservation) After a great meal......stroll through town grab a ice cream cone at the pharmacy and stroll on the docks to enjoy the moonlight over the town and water......so peaceful....

One of my favorite beaches is Nobaside....great sand bar this year! Or take the kids for a great scenic and relaxing bike ride at Jetty Beach stay for sunset and eat there too....

As you know I am always looking for my color inspirations....this time of year the window boxes, gardens and the abundance of hydrangeas are everywhere....They come in so many colors........different shades of Blue, white, and pink..... but my favorite are the voilet blue!

These last shots I took after dinner at the beach.....counting the days until I have to leave.

I must say that I am always excited to get back to my studio after a vacation, especially after I just redesigned my studio space before I left!

Highlights of my High Point Market Travels

After attending the grand High Point Market event I'm full of ideas.....it's always great to come back with a burst of new ideas and inspirations. Some of the highlights I want to share with you are Duralee's audacious and show stopping showroom.....take a look at these great pictures.....bold colors, big patterns, great accessories, and furniture...overall a well rounded space to showcase their products.

As you enter Duralee's showroom....you couldn't help but have your jaw drop with this stunning Peacock fabric from Thomas Paul Print 2 collection...I love the simplicity of the San Paulo armless sofa....it commanded attention with the stripe fabric that was added ...what a great concept! This years: Turquoise color was prominent throughout their set-up. It's always refreshing to see vibrant and lively colors that are captured from nature and interpreted for in home use.

Spring is officially here! With Earth Day around the corner I thought it would be fun to explore some Earth Friendly products that I can't live without. The interior designer in me is always looking for new and innovative products that can inspire my projects & get my clients excited.
Fashion continues to evolve my design eye day after day. I'm always left thoroughly inspired by the amazing Stella McCartney. I'm in love with her spring collection and how she has incorporated bold patterns and colors....And the cherry on top is her whimsical play on Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

Every great outfit deserves a show-stopping accessory to make a statement. I am always on the hunt for stylish accessories to finish off a fabulous look. This year's color: Turquoise! My must have accent piece for my overflowing jewelry collection is this Jose & Maria's Multi-Strand Turquoise piece from Neiman Marcus. Look great and forget the guilt...Turquoise stones are natural and precious & dying to be worn!

What a great season to spruce up your style and add a little Green into your home. Just like in fashion you always want to start with a foundation and add to that.....We all know that Paint is the most accessible and inexpensive way of changing the backdrop of your space, but have you tried the Aura Collection from Benjamin Moore? Everything Old is New Again

It’s a New Year and time for a new outlook on your old surroundings. We all have those staple pieces in our homes that we can’t live without, but they seem so tiresome….Here are some of my helpful tips for re-inventing the ordinary.

TRANSFORM YOUR HOME:

 BORING BOOKSHELVES? Tip: Spice them up by taking some foam core and cut so it fits snug to the back of your bookshelf. Then using some spray-mount and a fabric or wallpaper of your choice, simply stick and push to the back of the shelf. Simple, Chic, & Removable!

 LEFT OVER WALLPAPER? Tip: Change the appearance of several surfaces, coffee table, side table, etc. by taking left-over wallpaper from the bookshelves and cutting it to size to fit the top. Then place glass over top to finish. (Wallpaper can also make a nice runner on your dining table too) Instantly Refreshed!

 TIRED OF AN EVERYDAY CONSOLE TABLE? Tip: Cover the top in faux leather and line the perimeter of the piece with nail-heads. Now you have a custom table without paying that custom price.

 DULL CHAIRS? Tip: Don’t spend hundreds to re-upholster or refinish….Buy a can of high-gloss spray paint in a bold color and spray the frame of an old chair, leaving the neutral fabric. Now you have a chair that’s become a true statement piece, and don’t be afraid to use a bright orange or hot pink….The color will excite you & energize the space!

 RIBBON TO THE RESCUE! Tip: A Color Story can be expressed by the addition of some grosgrain ribbon to a simple lamp shade. As a matter of fact, Ribbon can transform more than your lamp shades…An ordinary bench can be lined with ribbon and nail-heads, add dimension to a room by lining the perimeter, chair backs, drapery edges & more!

Here's a couple Tips you didn't get to see....
 EXPENSIVE ART….YIKES! Tip: Make your own! Eileen often buys stacks of construction paper and emulates the work of famous colorists by strategically placing easy designs in like frames. So interesting, memorable, & cheap!

 NOT-SO-SPECIAL DESK? Tip: Find a funky fabric, something inspiring that you love and have a slip-cover made to fit over your desk. Depending on your fabric choice this can be done under $200. Ex. Marimekko has great fabrics at very affordable price points. Your desk is sure to be the only one of its kind!

These tips are sure to transform your home from drab & ordinary to fab & extraordinary. As evidence by the LX.TV segment above. I have often said it doesn't have to be expensive to look chic. Great design is everywhere; it's just a matter of training your eye to find it. And a little point in the right direction never hurts! 2010 is going to be a really exciting year....I am really energized and optimistic! I am starting several new projects this year I am always on the lookout for ways to get inspired....After a very busy holiday season I realized that two must see exhibits were about to close. You can always count on a great exhibit to spur on creativity. I stole some time and headed over to the Whitney and saw the exhibit "Abstracts"a collection of Georgia O'Keefe paintings, watercolors and line drawings. Her work always has inspired me even as a young girl.
Then I headed up to the Guggenheim and saw Kandinsky...Wow! what a thrill to see his work together in one space...unforgettable. I love the artbuzz you get when you are close and personal with such amazing and inspiring art. Of course, I bought the books and when home and poured over the pages again so I could remember my favorites....I posted a couple that I liked from the exhibit...I always take away a visual memory from these great artists and I weave a piece of it into my work....

Paint the Town Red!

Even before the final countdown to the holidays began I was thinking that it would be great to have a bold, red window display here in the shop. Our inspiration was this intriguing 3-dimensional looking wallpaper from Romo. With the addition of the nailheads you have touch it to convince yourself that is actually a flat surface.

Red is not typically one of my go-to colors, but nothing says celebration like red. Red conveys a sense of passion and intensity so much so that the phrases “Power Tie”and “Red Carpet” conjure up strong images. Crimson, ruby and rouge can all speed up your heart rate.
Think of Valentino and red is the first color that comes to mind. He practically invented the color. He’s the Ferrari of the fashion world.

The last two covers of Elle Décor featured red as the dominant color in their room designs. I think they may be on to something here.

One of my favorite fabric lines-Marimekko-often uses a pop of red with both orange and pink to really make a statement. And it’s a match made in heaven with a red Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair.

And red is such a popular color for front doors because it really stands out and looks great with almost any house color.

Paint It Black

Even though I’m known for my use of color I had to hold my breath when we decided to paint one of our showroom walls black. It was a bold move but it created just the kind of drama I was looking for. Not scary, Halloween black but sophisticated, elegant, mysterious black. A black wall can add depth and perspective to a room and can be as prestigious as “black tie”.

If any of you have seen the new film “Coco Before Chanel” you’ll know that she was the one who made the little black dress the chic, enduring fashion statement that we all own. In fashion or interiors you can make jewel tones pop with black or contrast it with white for a timeless combination.

Even if you’re not ready to take a leap of faith and paint a room or even a wall black, every room should have some black elements in it. It can provide definition or a common thread for the eye to follow. It can be as simple as the frames on photos, the grosgrain trim on a pillow or a few well-chosen accessories. We recently changed all the exterior doors here to black and it looks sleek and classic. But remember that black is not just black. It can carry the subtle differences in value in the likes of ebony, jet, ink, midnight or onyx. I absolutely fell in love with this striking image of Gwyneth Paltrow's beautiful black Hampton's kitchen...I am currently using this as the inspiration behind one of our client's butler's pantry. Stay tuned!

The Sunny Side of the Street

I figured this dreary fall day was a good time to continue with my color series and talk about the color that always makes me feel happy…YELLOW. This sunny color is one that I’ve been using lately in my design schemes as a “highlighter”. It perks up the more subdued neutral that has been one of my go-to colors for a while now-gray. Yellow can be a bit tricky-not too warm as it may read as gold and not too cool as it may turn to that acidy-greenish yellow that can be as unflattering in interiors as it is in fashion.This yellow stunner from the runway would send whoever walked the red carpet in it straight to the top of the best-dressed list.

And why do you think those iconic rain slickers come in yellow? Gotta be because they’re one of the bright spots on a stormy day.

This intriguing door system in yellow really grabbed my attention. It turns an industrial look into a chic design statement.

I credit the yellow I used in this designer showhouse in part with helping me land the cover of Traditional Home. The estate venue was limiting for many of the designers because of all the dark wood that had to remain untouched. Luckily I had free-reign and knew that my room would feel like a ray of sunshine.

Tickled Pink

Pink is one of those excitable colors that lingers with you long after it's gone. Even though Pink is often associated with little girls & their dream bedrooms, there is a way for even us big girls to bring the blush of Pink back into everyday life. I always jump at the chance to have some fun with Pink....

Here are some great examples of how pink (and more specifically Hot Pink) can work in every area of your life....Pink often adds that perfect pop of unexpected color that just holds your eye captive and in this case defines the space. I love the idea of painting the trim so it appears so predominantly....Unforgettable whimsy. Or, if your on the brave side, you can allow Pink to take center-stage by covering an entire wall with a bold print, like suggested below. And paired with that neutral chair...Magical!

Pink has had many admirers over the years...One being design icon Dorothy Draper. Her book, In the Pink, is a must read if you're as crazy for this hue as I am.

Pink is certainly no stranger to fashion either. I've found that Hot Pink is either making a cameo as an accessory or completely dominating an entire outfit. This Chanel bag is the perfect accent to punch up any outfit...Whether it be your classic LittleBlackDress or just jeans & a Tee, heads will turn.

I am madly in love with this jaw-dropping Marc Jacobs raincoat...I'm certain I could weather practically anything in this coat, completely armed in style.

And then there's every girls dream....a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes. These Pink pumps are such show-stoppers. So Carrie Bradshaw!

This beautiful velvet Designer's Guild fabric was the perfect shade of Hot Fuchsia-Pink that my room needed....No other color would've sufficed. These slipper chairs were my exclamation point to a neutral base and complemented the artwork by the late, great Stanley Twardowicz perfectly.

We all feel connected to this little Pink symbol and October has dedicated itself to the Pink ribbon in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's a good reminder to all of us women to be taking care of ourselves and those we love. It's important that we continue to support & donate to wonderful organizations such as the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer foundation. Pink continues to inspire.

Orange Crush

The color orange draws a strong reaction from most people-you usually either love it or hate it. But the right shade of orange is something I often try to incorporate into my rooms. It's associated with things as wide-ranging as those much coveted Hermes boxes to that familiar Home Depot logo. And remember what a stir those thousands of orange flags in Christo's "The Gates" caused? In China and Japan orange is used to symbolize happiness & wealth. But I think that orange is fun & flamboyant and radiates warmth and energy. Here in the shop we figured we'd welcome in fall with a fab orange scheme. That's Benjamin Moore's "Raucous Orange" on the wall in our front window. And how glam does that Ressler Bergere chair look with its lacquered frame and Duralee fabrics? So fabulous we named it our Mick-Jaguar Chair...The perfect mixture of playful-luxury. We really went for the mix-antique pieces like the chest and leather chairs that we're featuring on 1st Dibs on top of a West Elm rug-it all works beautifully together.

Who wouldn't get noticed in these orange peep-toe pumps? Even celebrity chef Mario Batali with his orange crocs draws as much attention for his footwear as he does for his fabulous cuisine.

The genius of this table setting is in its crisp simplicity. The repetition of these orange posies in a sea of white has a strong 'WOW!' factor.

This orange lacquered ornate chest featured at the High Point Furniture Market grabbed the attention of everyone that passed. The finish on this piece was my inspiration for my Mick-Jaguar Chair."Orange is the happiest color."-Frank Sinatra

If you don't know by now I am completely driven by all things COLOR....

Color: (n) a property that becomes apparent when light falls on an object and by which things that are identical in form can be distinguished.

So since all my thoughts and time is spent obsessing over distinguishing moments, I've decided to do a series of blogs dedicated to individual colors that I love. And we are kicking things off with a timeless BLUE....

Right now I'm in a BLUE state of mind, which all began when my dear friend & talented photographer Sean Murphy showed me some of his recent shots. I became completely lost and mesmerized by this glistening image. Don't you just want to dive right in? I'm still hanging on to summer.

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is upon us and New York City is bustling with excitement.....Blue is all over the runway and these are some of my favorite take-aways...
Katie Ridder is a girl after my own heart....That is the spot-on BLUE that I just love - especially when paired with those red & green accents. Well-Done!

It has often been said that great design will always prevail against time, and it’s so exciting when you can see that design still making waves today. One of my favorite compliments to receive is that my work contains a timeless flavor. I like to use color in a way that is seldom expressed and exude confidence doing so which has taken me many years to perfect (Though I still get nervous with some decisions). Recently I have been sprucing up my own home and have been able to exercise some fearless design throughout each space.
A particularly special room to for me is my sun-porch. I use this room as a design laboratory; a place to inspire and develop my creative journey from project to project. The end result landed my porch in a sea of beautiful green Chella Fabric and a very fashion-forward Trina Turk pattern. I accented with pops of turquoise and other vibrant blues, creating pure tranquility.

While flipping through one of my vintage House Beautiful Mags, I came across a room decorated by Richard Phelps that had an uncanny resemblance to my own design. The June 1971 article was highlighting inventive ways to inspire your outdoor oasis. I absolutely love those cubes & green zebra print never looked better. A wonderful tribute that good design is always in style….Even 30 yrs later!

Lights, Camera, Action

I am so excited, and bit nervous, to announce that I will be making my very first Network Television Debut this Sunday on NBC's LX.TV Open House NYC.
The segment will be featuring Fashionable Tips of the Trade to dress up YOUR home!
I was so thrilled when I heard the news that LX.TV wanted to work with me and even more thrilled when the story developed into a fashion angle. As many know, all of my designs are heavily influenced by fashion in one way or another.....Whether it be by bold unexpected color choices or interesting shapes & couture details. And since the shoot was taking place at my home, I could really push the creativity to the MAX.

This was one of the most enjoyable & most challenging shoots I've ever been a part of. Not working with a film crew before, I was quite intimidated when they pulled into my driveway. I'm happy to report that those feelings quickly melted away as they proved to be the greatest group of young talented, creative people I have worked with in a long time. There’s nothing worse than a well put together woman that walks into her home and completely falls a part amidst utter chaos. Clutter, mayhem, & uninspiring spaces are definitely not reflecting who she is to the outside world.
My purpose in life is to consistently create unforgettable retreats that people can look & feel good in...Allowing those outward appearances to match what’s inside.
So many of my clients come to me and simply say, "Eileen, I just don't feel good in my house...I don't know where to start!" So I have come up with some great tips for implementing some unexpected fashionable elements that are sure to leave any home dressed at a moments notice. (And the best part is…everything is affordable)
· Infusing life & fashion through a bold COLOR STORY…..the cheapest way of completely transforming the look & feel of any space is to surround yourself in colors you love and are physically drawn to….These are colors that will naturally compliment you. So don’t be afraid to use them! Start with an accent wall or just the background of bookcases for an unexpected pop. Instantly adding depth of interest.

· Edit & Accessorize what you already have…..Be a practical stager and create vignettes with your books and sentimental items. Arrange your books in a sculptural style or by color groupings. These added touches paired with a great Color Story will effortlessly turn clutter into couture- inspired.

· Architecture is but a RIBBON away…..The best trick for adding dimension and the appearance of moldings is by outlining the perimeter of a space with a colorful grosgrain ribbon. Life has been such a world-wind the past two months. Now that I've found a moment to catch my breath, I am realizing all that I need to catch-up on.

First things first, I am dying to walk through Bergdorf's....I am always so inspired by their shoe department. There are just so many amazing design ideas in high-end fashion and they really allow my mind to float outside the box.

Secondly and equally as important, I am excited to check out the International Contemporary Furniture Fair taking place at the Jacob Javits Center on May 16th through the 19th. After such a crazy-wonderful experience, like Kips Bay, I really need something to re-charge my design battery and it's just so much fun to explore these international concepts.

I have heard such wonderful reviews about the special exhibition at the MET, The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion. The exhibit captures modeling over a period of 50 years, from 1947-1997. I can't wait to take my daughter!

Springtime in New York is always filled with such activity and inspiration. I am most excited to spend some quality time with my family and dig into some really great projects I have coming.

Every designer aspires to be invited to partake in the Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse....It's definitely the Superbowl in the interior design world. When I found out in February that I was selected as one of only 30 designers, I was simultaneously thrilled and terrified. Thrilled to exercise my creativity in such a prestigious forum and terrified by the pressure to execute my vision in such a short time frame.

Spring Forward with Fashionable Fabrics

Who isn't tired of winter? It's time to usher in a spring frame-of-mind with these fresh hip fabrics from fashion icon Trina Turk.

I absolutely love her newly introduced line of indoor * outdoor fabrics for Schumacher Modern. Just think of all the practical possiblities!

If you are familiar with my aesthetic you will notice that fashion is threaded throughout my designs. I have always been a great admirer of her work and brilliant use of color. I was lucky to be loaned one of her hot orange peep-hole dresses for a photo shoot from one of my favorite Huntington boutiques, Rexer-Parkes.

Inspiration is Just a Click Away....

I finally had a spare minute to do some much-needed inspiration research. In the comfort of my home in my jammies I get completely relaxed hunting around for great ideas for my next project. Being so busy doesn't always allow me the luxury to research myself, so I look forward to these moments.

I don't about you, but I am completely over winter. These two palettes are so fresh & clean and they scream SPRING!

Talk about a POP of color, these two images are pushing the color envelope to its limit. The fusion of these two contrasting palettes, the neutral paired with bold, create color magic.

I am always so excited when people come into my shop and tell me they came for inspiration. It makes me so happy to be somebody's point of reference. Right now my shop is chock-full of some amazing deals. Everything from chandeliers to desk lamps, mirrors to armoires, & all that's in between.

Clean Sweep

We all feel compelled to make those hard-to-keep New Year's Resolutions. But this year I decided to keep my goals attainable and thought that by sharing some ideas with you it might help you begin giving your home a fresh start for 2009. Lately, I've been using some of the basic principles of Feng Shui to guide me through the ritual of starting off the New Year with a clean slate. Nothing is better than how you feel after de-cluttering....Put away, donate, or just toss those things in your home that don't give you pleasure. We're all buried under mountains of papers and magazines, so do your best to start with that. Any clothes, books, household items or gifts that have been sitting around and unused should move on. If something is broken, fix it! If something is looking a little tired, re-paint it. I guarantee you will feel like a giant weight has been lifted off of you. You'll be free to move on in more creative directions.

I find it hard to focus on a new project for the home until the cleansing process has been completed. Only then can my creative juices start flowing. We recently undertook this process in my shop and studio. What a positive transformation! The fabric studio is a dream to work in and the shop windows are sparkling with new ideas. My team and I are in the process of embarking on some new and very exciting projects (stay tuned to upcoming blogs for the latest).

My wish for you all is a joyful, prosperous and spiritually uplifting 2009. I hope that my team can inspire you all to make your homes a place that is a pleasure to come home to.

Back to the Drawing Board...

One of the biggest stumbling blocks in the creative process is usually...getting started. There are so many ideas and inspirations swirling around that it becomes difficult to edit them. Trying to formulate a cohesive plan is often a huge roadblock in design.

Keeping an idea file is a great reference for everyone. A notebook filled with magazine tear-sheets, fabric snippets, paint swatches, photographs, and anything else that catches your minds eye. These files can be of great assistance when getting the creative juices flowing.

For me, due to my painting & art background, sketching what my fantasy for a project is usually where I start. I find that some of my clients have a difficult time visualizing my ideas....A sketch often shines a revealing light onto a prospective idea.
Sketches are helpful in so many ways...For example, furniture placement and finding the holes where you can now create a furniture 'wish list.' I always do my best to incorporate pieces a client already possesses and show them how they will be transformed into the new space. Whether it be by re-upholstery or a change of paint & hardware....If it has great bones it's worth the effort and expense to transform it.

Of course, color is extremely important when sketching as well. I live and breathe color and therefore am always incorporating it into my drawings. It is such a vital part of my design process that it can help convince a color-reluctant client to take that leap of faith. Once they do....Watch out because color is powerful once it's unleashed!

Problem...SOLVED!

Great interior design is often a series of exercises in problem solving. They usually require us to think outside of the box. Or, in this case, inside the box of my New York City apartment.
For better or worse, apartment dwellers get to know their neighbors intimately. One of the challenges I face is trying to create a calm, quiet, and serene retreat in the midst of this hectic city. Here are some great tips from my contribution to Time Out New York....After the ceiling is soundproofed a clever way to finish it off is by using wallpaper. I find that wallpaper often solves many design dilemmas. For my dining room I choose a bold look that I'm experimenting with for several other projects I'm working on. Wolf Gordon makes a fabulous smooth patent wall-covering in many beautiful shimmery colors. I chose a metallic bronze that reflects the light of the chandelier. Not only does this create a great finishing touch, it also gives the illusion of additional space....Something every New Yorker yearns for in their apartments. The use of the grosgrain ribbon from MJ Trimming and silver nail heads add a finished appeal as well as architectural interest. This project really freshened up my cozy dining room. Definitely pick up a copy of this Home Design Issue of TimeOut NY...There are so many great ideas!

options....It's always a question of which one works best? I love to mix it up....even in the same room. Traditional sofas and chairs can sometimes be so expected and way too structured. These alternatives provide ample flexibility....From the Tet-e-Tet to comfy floor cushions to an easy to place slipper chair, the prospects are endless.

This shadow box filled with specimen butterflies is one of my all-time favorite custom projects.

No room is complete without the perfect window treatments. It's my favorite area of the design process, because I am able to flex my creative muscles. It's the perfect pairing of using fabulous fabrics with couture details to create a one-of-a-kind look.
This luscious Albert Hadley fabric that dresses these windows take the room from drab to fab!

By adding the fun blue ring detail to these seemingly predictable sheers the panels are transformed from simple to sophisticated.

I can never get enough of this color combo...I'm just crazy about that Lee Jofa fabric! The blending of the panels and the roman shade add so much depth and interest to the room. One more layer of texture and color...

These window treatments look as if they can dance right off the windows. They rock!

Two Heads Are Better Than One!

Summer is coming to an end and that means back to school and back to work. Here at the EKB Shop we head back to our design workroom to begin scheming! Refreshed after many lazy summer days we are ready to get back to creating beautiful color stories for our clients.

It's true that you are only as good as those talented individuals you surround yourself with. In my profession creativity is such a collaborative process! My right-hand and fabric guru, Creative Design Director Beth, is an integral part of the EKB design team. She is always fabric scheming and researching innovative and exciting color stories. She's amazing! Like myself, Beth takes many of her design cues from her chic fashion sense!

There is really only one way to describe the pulling together of a showhouse project and that is CRAZY! Deadlines, last-minute changes, and unforeseen mishaps are all part of the job. We need to be ready for anything! My team is just so unbelievable when it comes to multi-tasking and problem solving. Beth is always my oasis of calm in a sea of chaos....I don't know what I would do without her!

And at last, the finished product! I am so proud of my team and all that we accomplished with this beautiful room! I loved using all of those Duralee fabrics and furniture....There was so much great product to choose from and Beth and I had to use our editing-eyes to make this room pure perfection!

Mirror, Mirror.....Reflections on Design

Great mirrors reflect the soul of the house.....That's why I take careful consideration when selecting a mirror because the placement is so critical. Whether it be bringing the outdoors inside or simply reflecting life within....Mirrors can be functional or fashionable.

Art is given a new perspective through reflection in this mirror. Light was such an important element in my Hamptons Showhouse room....What a fabulous custom mirror....it amplifies and captures that unique light element found only at the East End.

In yet another one of my projects, I choose to incorporate a custom faux-snakeskin mirror as a foil to the hot pink and orange palette used throughout the design scheme.

At first the large scale of this old home was a bit intimidating....However, instead of trying to play down the scale of the soaring space I decided to run with it! By introducing this trio of custom made mirrors the room was instantly pulled together and an intimate feel was created!

And on a much smaller but no less important scale, this convex starburst mirror is the perfect little "jewelry" element for this quaint living space.

How can you have a commercial space like this high-end vintage clothing boutique without mirrors that are equally as fabulous as the items within! I love the flexibility of this floor- standing custom mirror....it can be easily moved when ever things need to be freshened up!

Green With Envy....

I never know when it's going to hit me! Whether I am at the reptile house in the Bronx Zoo or a street corner market in Paris.....I find inspiration in the most unusual places! The serpentine lines of this chair, paired with the fabulous GREEN mix of fabrics, brought a piece of the Bronx and Paris to my showhouse in the Hamptons.

From walking to my office in Manhattan to my shop and studio in Huntington.....GREEN inspirations just keep following me everywhere I go! Even a small element, like these custom cushions on a clients kitchen chairs, makes such a bold impact within the neutral framework.

I loved incorporating theses beautiful natural GREEN touches on my tabletop design for a House & Garden Event. Eco-Chic at its best for sure!

The Dog Days of Summer....

Always keep a sense of whimsy in the forefront of your design scheme....There is nothing worse than someone that takes themselves too seriously when putting together a room! This piece does just that! The unexpected round frame and large scale make this puppy come to life. In this vignette, found in my shop, I've incorporated faux-animal print pillows on the accompanying sofa. Although the palette remains neutral an element of fun still shines through loud and clear!

The Zebra print carpet is a great way to transform a traditional landscape into a modern oasis! Its playful edge is just enough to wow people when they walk through the door, but not overwhelm them! I even chose to use it running up my front stairs....It's the first thing you see when you enter my home and it says "welcome!"

My shop stylist Lois recently revamped one of my window stories. I love her use of these versatile Duralee ottomans upholstered in a faux-snakeskin, trimmed out with nickel nail heads. This cohesive look sets the stage for a fabulous vintage glass & Lucite table and the mid-century modern chair, which are all tied together by a fun faux-cowhide rug! I love this look....whimsical, playful, & perfect!

Color Me Happy With Wallpaper!

One of my favorite tricks for brightening up a space is achieved by taking a piece of MDF and covering it with a striking wallpaper. To finish the look, I add molding around the edges to give the wallpaper a framed finish. Many of my clients fall in love with these dramatic and enticing papers but are hesitant to use them on their walls. This is a great way to ease these fun prints into your home without the permanence of actually wallpapering.

Another way to incorporate exciting wallpapers into a space is to pick a focal point to be highlighted. I often find that choosing one wall or designated area for the wallpaper helps it to shine. In the EKB Shop, I emphasized the fireplace with this Designer's Guild floral print which compliments the lavender and purple wall colors. This space now draws your eye immediately, adding interest and depth to the room.

Now, if you are that rare individual who isn't afraid of bold patterns and colors.....completely wallpapering a space can make a small room majorly POP! This is my personal powder room at the Shop and every time I walk in I'm instantly inspired! If you do decide to use artwork in a space like this, it must be graphic and simple. Don't let it fight with the wallpaper for attention!

Everyone always forgets the ceiling....But why not take advantage of this great space and wallpaper it! In my new showhouse, I used a very subdued shade and pattern of wallpaper to further enhance the light airiness of the room. It really added an extra level of completeness to the space....And why should you leave any corner of a room undesigned? Wallpapers have come along way over the years and it's time to start embracing them into our homes and lives!

It's All in the Details!

For me, a trip into my closet to pull together a chic outfit isn't all that different from how I begin designing a room. The color combinations are endless...Couture details are such a critical part of my design aesthetic...No outfit or room is ever completely finished without great accessories, whether it be a statement piece of jewelry or an opulent chandelier. It always surprises me how many possibilities you can derive from mixing fashion and interior design.

When vacationing in Nantucket, I came across the work of Peter Gee, renowned colorist. I was visiting a good friend, Vanessa
Noel, owner of Cafe V and her namesake Hotel, and she had many of his pieces displayed. This particular piece reminded me so much of my 'Day Dream Believer' Showhouse room.

I just love this color combination! These refreshing sorbet-esque splashes layered with this soft neutral ground create a livable and inspiring space! And isn't that what we are all looking for at the end of a tough day? Elements of good design are attainable at any price point...Pick up an issue of Vogue for the fashion inspirations that can carry over into reviving that sanctuary that we all call home!

Summertime and the Livin' is Easy!

Since I've been vacationing here on Nantucket, I am finding it harder and harder to come indoors at the end of a perfect day. There is such a peace and tranquility about lazy summer days, I just never want to give them up! I wanted to create that feeling here in the Florida Keys in this lovely outdoor living space. In a place like Ocean Reef, the lines are blurred between outdoor and indoor living. These homeowners are known to have a party at a moments notice and this space allows them to do just that! Its flexible floor plan is conducive to both intimate gatherings or lavish affairs!

My absolute, favorite room in my home is my sun-porch! Even though we can't use it 12 months a year...it only makes it that much more enjoyable when those beautiful days do start appearing. I incorporated my signature color throughout the cushions and used the same care I would in designing any other room in my house. The sun-porch is a perfect place for morning coffee, an afternoon nap, and or sharing a cocktail with friends in the evening!

Light Up Your Life!!

Here in Nantucket my favorite time of day is just before sunset....It's calming and serene and just magical! It has proved to be my best time for reflecting and organizing my creative thoughts. Part of the reason I love sunset has to do with the lighting and how it affects the play of colors on one another.

I designed the interior for this high-end vintage clothing boutique, but the project just wasn't complete until I added this dramatic, customized chandelier. By introducing this sexy fixture, complimented by the added sheer shade, an element of glamour was established and center stage was created.

All aspects of lighting were taken into consideration while updating this quaint Tudor home. In the dining room both natural and enhanced lighting interplay with one another. The balance between streaming sunshine from the garden beyond and the flattering glow radiating from the chandelier and accent lamp, make this the perfect setting for intimate dinner parties! The reflection of light from both the mirror and the metallic finish on the side-board offer an extension of light and airy perspective into the room.
